| What is a Gatekeeper and what does it do? |
| Gatekeeper is a device defined under H.323 and does: |
- Bandwidth management of H.323 over the interconnect circuit between
your LAN and WA-K20.
- Admission control governs an end point's access to other codecs,
MCUs and Gateways.
- Error logging - for diagnostics.
- Troubleshooting by the WA-K20 operator.
- Dial Plan.

| |
| Does your Institution have its own Gatekeeper? |
| If your institution has a gatekeeper on your network, we recommend that you coordinate with WA-K20 to create a relationship between the Gatekeepers to enable dialing and connecting with other WA-K20 and global sites. This will ensure compatability with the WA-K20 dialing plan. Contact Ben Roy at 1-888-934-5552 option 3. |
| |
| WA-K20's Dialing Plan: |
| Clients that are registered to a gatekeeper can connect point-to-point
to each other using an E.164 (alias) number.
If you have a system that supports H.323 videoconferencing you can use it to connect with other H.323 sites and participate in multipoint conferences with other H.323 or H.320 (ISDN) video sites. |
| WA-K20's plan also enables calls to the Lucent ISDN MCU. This means
that you will be able to connect to other ISDN sites using H.323.
But, you MUST use the WA-K20 MCU. |
In order to fully participate in the K20 H.323 network you will need to register your endpoint with a Gatekeeper. The Gatekeeper provides the translation between an IP address and a H.323 alias, and controls which endpoints can use shared resources such as MCUs and Gateways. |
| The WA-K20 H.323 network participates in the ViDe.Net gatekeeper peering hierarchy. This enables you to connect with sites around the world without knowing their IP address or needing to register with the same gatekeeper. |
| To configure your endpoint you need to set the gatekeeper, H.323 name, and H.323 extension in your own system. |
| |
| H.323 name (h323_ID, H.323 user name, etc.): |
| This should be a unique name across the entire K-20 network (statewide). |
- For classroom and room endpoints we recommend setting the H.323 name with the following format: "Institution-Building-Room".
|
- For desktop endpoints (i.e. ViaVideos) we recommend setting the H.323 name as the users email address.
|
| |
| H.323 Extension (dialedDigits, E.164, Gatekeeper alias, User number, etc.): |
| This MUST be unique across the entire K-20 network(statewide). |
- Set this to the main phone number of the buidling or room in which it is located. Please include your area code but do not use dashes, hyphens or other punctuation (ie. 5096652610).
- K20 can also assign you a number for this setting.
To request a number assignment, follow the instructions at this Ohio FLZ link ,
but be sure to select "Washington K-20 Network" as your primary zone.
- If you do not wish to be a part of the ViDeNet directory, then you can send an email to isdn@wa-k20.net to request a number assignment for your endpoint. You will need to provide your contact information, ip address, and name of your system (h323_ID).
- Alternativly, anyone can register with the public ViDeNet gatekeeper. For more instructions see the Ohio State FLZ site .

| How to register your H.323 endpoint with the K-20 Gatekeeper: |
| NCESD technical staff are knowledgable of Polycom and Tandberg units and can help you if you need assistance. |
- Use the following WA-K20 Gatekeeper address:
gatekeeper.wa-k20.net or 216.186.4.187
|
| |
| Manufacturer's instructions for programming the Gatekeeper: |
- Polycom
- Tandberg

Refer to your user manual or open the Tandberg
880 manual above and go to page 72.
- If you have a codec other than listed, refer to your manual,
vendor or manufacturer.
|
| |
| How to test your H.323 endpoint: |
| The North Central ESD has an endpoint that is available 24/7 for testing your endpoint. |
- Use the following H.323 Extension: 5096652610
